Vindication?

So, those of you that understand meh can isms better than I......what's your opinion, was this a Coop riveting failure?  Changed oil in the Himalayan tonight and this side plate had fallen off the chain and was under one of the other tires, noticed when I made some room.  Part of the pin is stuck inside the hole.

Was my process a potential cause?

  1. I see no deflections...damages.. faiure... issues with the plate.. and we'll assume the pin was pressed-centered with good expansion... I'd lean towards pin (metal) failure.

    1. My diagnosis as well. You can see the scored line where the pin tore across the plate.

  2. Blackburn sounds smarter than I am, which does not require much... When you mushroomed the pins over the plate, did it match the surrounding mushroomed pins on the other links?

    1. Mark, the look of my riveting didn't match OEM; their 'tool' much different than the pin used in the Motion Pro tool. I don't have the chain in front of me but I'm guessing the production chain process leaves a uniform head to the rivet. The hand-applied tool distorts/deforms from the center outward. I'll take a closer look at the diameter of the tool's mandrel.

I can imagine that enough force could be applied to stress the pin deep enough to cause failure which very well may have been induced by me. I'd have to think it's a 'feel' thing, something I normally don't have an issue with. This time may have been an exception.

  3. Is that a crack or split in the side plate?

    1. Richard, it only looks that way. I'd call it a scratch that was etched in as the broken pin was dragged across it under load.
