Optimism Prevails - 2023/03/22

Just as a reminder to us all, Spring has arrived.

But our optimism, especially Peg's, runs High!

Here's what we'll be shooting for....there will of course be a new plan and some crop rotation.

500 Barns, the movie - 2023/03/08

Almost exactly a year ago, I published a book called 500 BARNS.  In it, I attempted to highlight from my perspective, a bit of history as well as a current look at our MN/WI dairy barns.  It was a quick look back with some history using photos that I stopped for while passing by on various machines....over 600 in all.

The book did not contain 500 or more photos, in fact it contained far fewer.  To focus on some of the many photographs that were not included in the book, I made a short film and it's located You know where.

Two Busy - 2023/02/24

We'll start with what was happening in the nice, warm and cozy Manufacturing Area.

One Busy.... Production starts here.  I made what I believed to be an impossible to refuse offer to photograph the Team Associate actually creating these triangles.  However, I was convinced as well as  concerned that the returned threat was real.  An additional offer was even made to wait until her uniform was less PJ-like.  It made no difference, that photo will not appear in this collection.

Early stages in the Assembly Area (these are not ties Eric!).

Another quilt, this one 7' x 8', staged for Final Assembly.

Then we move out of doors....

Two was colder and only barely light when I started busy outside.  I'm to understand that our official total was 8-9" but I can show you more than one drift in the yard that's knee deep.

I will mention here that the bikes have nary a flake.... though what follows today (and others) is that I get to be Busy.

But things improved.....

Our Busy work complete for today.

Time For Another Potpourii Post - 2023/02/20

'Cause that's all I got!

I'll start with Today's should learn this....Word..."Petrichor".  Those of us North are looking forward to this with great anticipation!

Speaking of North, we inhabitants are all too familiar with this sort of  'ventilating' air and bumpers alike run much cooler.

A safe missed this weekend's Big Turn Music Festival?  Mark your calendars for '24 so that it won't happen again!

Saturday morning's sunshine and milder temps brought out the opportunity to do something about our bumpy, rolling skating rink....action was taken and that action actually accomplished something by day's (and weekend's) end.

The sand not only provides grip but provides darkness for Ol' Sol to do what she does.

Enough slope here....impossible to stand.  Or was.

Not yet Best....

Peg's ongoing Fabric Arts quest...the Elna's been-a-whirring!  That sound, though not quite as pleasant as her old spinning wheel once was, will certainly do.

Dull discards....

Staring at the shop door this morning a few minutes were spent reviewing the Coop Time Capsule.  A young (and very small) soldier with (only two of) his sisters.  Additionally, the other young man left, top left..."Bob" the young soldier's 8th grade grandfather with his graduating class in small town northern Wisconsin.

I've been monkeying around making dust and smoke....using my vocational skills avocationally.

There's excitement in the air....some of us are packing and stacking gear, off-road bikes soon to be in rural Arkansas.  Other summer rallies, long ago marked on calendars, are being dreamed about.  Further travel and explorations are on our horizons.

That young soldier highlighted above will soon be returning to the US of A, his fiance just finishing up her stint with the Air Force, their upcoming matrimony only a few short months away.

The Big Circle spins, it doesn't stop.  A reminder you do not need.

A Warm Minnesota Monday - 2023/02/13

We've still got snow but it's settling and though the valley is still mostly white, we may not stay that way before the next snowfall whitens us up again.  More than anything, these warm sunny days are, if not melting, then making our thick layers of driveway ice nicely porous.  And that's a VERY good thing!

A hike to the mailbox and some snack-em's for the chickens.

Plowing Snowmen - 2023/01/20

A new layer, 5-6" of snow that didn't necessarily fall wet but quickly became so.  As I plowed, the 'leavings' reminded me of snowmen bases.  The process was a bit more challenging but the waves of wet snow sliding on our glare ice driveway was actually kind of fun.

A Lovely 1° - 2023/01/07

It will be warm(er) later, but the air is full of cold moisture and I believe, an air inversion with warmer air above.  Not so hot for breathing but lovely in its own cold, hazy way.

The deer (same few late every afternoon) continue to forage our dead-fall apples.

And on to other 'wildlife', this fall a new Stray arrived and we have to believe it's a Tom.  Seemingly refined and polished, at least compared to the other temporary lodgers we've had over the years, I have to wonder if he wasn't dropped off.  To our knowledge, he doesn't associate any of the neighbors with 'home'.

He's been spending a lot of time here....he and of course the bunny raggits.

Another thing noticed this morning, a cat/coyote crossing.

Just before Christmas, we had another one of those Magical Mornings, too nice to keep the drone cooped up inside.

I've been noticing Sir Eagle watching over our little corner of the valley.  Fine by long as he avoids chickens.  Often he's not alone, his partner his accompanist.

All in all, I'm calling it a gentle winter in our valley so far.  Those that live in and closer to the Twin Cities would beg to differ.  They've had substantially more snow....we're quite satisfied with what we've been given.
