Montana/Alberta - 2026/07/27

Right off the bat, huge thanks to friend Tom that offered suggestions, ideas and 'secret' spots to visit while at Glacier National Park.  The beers and time we shared at Kip's Beer Garden in St Mary won't be forgotten.

It was a pickup truck trip, I suppose obviously much to the chagrin of most of my friends.....I never once regretted my decision.  With no trailer, motorcycle(s), bicycles....there was a certain freedom, always able to quickly and without concern walk away from my transportation device.  I saw 99 degrees across the prairies and the morning I left St Mary, 36 degree rain.  IIRC, the thermostat was set at 71 in the truck.

Here's the Grand Overview result.....

and here's the MT/AB area highlighted.

I stopped west of Hunter, ND to see the farm that our dad helped with wheat harvest.  It was August 1948, he was 22 and home from the South Pacific.

I spent the night in the Lions campground, Glen Ullin, ND.  $6 campsite, quiet and comfortable.

 Breakfast in Glen Ullin....

The old Hwy 10 just west of Glen Ullin.....I've been here before, more than once.  Our way West before I-94 was completed, US 10 back then went half a mile from our Roseville, MN home.  While we're on the antiquity subject, this trip was my 4th trip to Glacier National Park.  In 1955 I was 6 months old, in 1966 with mom and dad I was 11, in 1976 I was in Glacier with friend Brad and I was 21....check my math.  Brad was on his Kawasaki 900, I was on my CB750.

From inside Theodore Roosevelt NP, South Unit.  This view over the Medora Valley to the new Roosevelt Presidential Library.....note the Amtrak patiently waiting for passengers.

More on the library in a Post to follow ....

My next stop, Vananda, Montana.  Our grandmother spent her teen years here.  The family left Oskaloosa, IA for 'better' times ahead.  Her dad and her uncle bought two half sections of land off to the right....

The school that they were very proud of and rightly so....

North of the school, their home near the top of that knoll...

 Gram and her two sisters....1923.

I couldn't help myself, found a room in Great Falls after a very hot, long day of enjoying the MT prairies.  I've recently heard about renegade groups of 'bikers' playing havoc on city streets, huge groups stunting, riding in opposing lanes, etc, etc in other locations.  My motel in GF was a block off their main drag and it was happening deep into the night....screaming sport bikes that couldn't have been stopping for lights.
I did not and still do not approve.

Registering at Johnson's Campground in St Mary, east side of Glacier National Park.
