You must be joking- Update

Power out (generator running), roads horrible, 'working from home'

May 2

Noon Update ***************

This pole was perfectly vertical the last time I looked.

Our rain gauge recording what it can......

The grid.....

Ready to freshen and dry the laundry.....

Even our Sasquatch on the power pole looks bummed......

Oh, and the folks at our local Red Wing Motorbike Club are planning an "End of Summer" party tonight.

  1. Power is out?! Oh I hate those heavy storms. I don't even like living in a house with no fireplace! First time ever for me!

Northern states can be mighty inconvenient for those who like to live and play outside. Life is too short for this stuff.

  2. Well the coffee is hot, the house is warm and things scheduled for today are now forcibly more relaxed. Once I put another gallon in the generator, some more food in the bird feeder, I'm expecting a soothing nap to get back that false early start for the City.

At this point, attendance at Slimey Crud this weekend is looking even more bleak than it was.

  3. Oh no! Sending you some sun from London, stat!
And a power outage? Better stay at home, get the wood fireplace (I take a strong guess you have one...) and 'tele-work'.

    1. Sonja,
Sending sun from London is a true gift; not just anyone could pull that off.
Nope, we've not had a wood fireplace. The generator is providing power so that our propane furnace can work as normal. Peg is able to work at home; brought her laptop home and our wifi/computers are 'hot'.

I'm in the garage working on the green SL100, almost finished and then hope to get that Cafe bike back on the rack.

Soak up as much UK sun as possible!

  4. Coop:

I had to check, It's not April 1st is it. I thought you were April Fooling.

Look at the good side of things. Your River has stopped flowing, now you can drive out to the main road.

    1. Bob,
Our driveway is a matter of tense.....we could but very soon we'll call it "can't". There's no way these many inches won't cause us trouble.

Careful planning is underway, Peg has to leave Saturday for Cleveland to bring our daughter home from school.

  5. That looks like a lot of snow and it must be really wet to bring down power lines. Look on the bright side, it won't last very long once the storm passes...

    Cleveland. A Buckeye?

  6. Richard,
As tough as it is to say, we'd really prefer a nice slow melt....doubt we'll get it.

Two of our girls attended Cleveland Institute of Music, part of Case Western.

    2. Richard,
Our girls had a recital there years ago; sounds like a great place.

My mom lives in a first ring suburb of St. Paul and they had nothing.

  7. I think both the Slimey Crud Run and the fishing opener will have to wait... I've lost power a few times today, but only for a minute or 2 each time. No back up generator here, but the fireplace would provide some heat. I also filled a couple of pails with water in case of a longer outage I could still flush... I'll have to think about a propane fueled back up.

    1. I walked out of the house at 3:30 this morning to make the commute and part of the reason I turned around after trying to cope with 5" of slush on the highway was for the fact that we'd had 4 'blinks' of power before I even walked out the door.

    1. Yes, a nice day at my place of employment, more than likely has all those that weren't included in my email to them, "where's Coop?"

  9. Oh, that is so not cool. Cold? yes. Cool? no sir.

Sure hope it melts fast, just not fast enough to flood you out again.

    1. Thanks Brandy, our concern as well. It's almost solid water now, done much settling today so we'll see what happens tomorrow. Again, 60 degrees can wait a few days.

    1. I can't imagine a more beautiful sight! Last weekend's one hour of 80 was almost too much. This as in so many other things, a bit of moderation would be nice.

  11. This really is a spring snow. One of those heavy mean ones. The last slap. It's the classic one that makes northerners say "Welllllll...you never know. We could get a heavy wet snow even in April yet..."

    1. According to MPR, they're allllmost ready to call it a MN record snowfall for May. Never in recorded history......

  12. And I thought Ontario weather was bad ... it has melted and become glorious (touch wood) here. Hope your spring comes back.

    1. Karen,
We seem to be stuck in a "Two Months Ago" time warp. Next week is sounding better, though still not average. In two weeks, I'm attending my first rally of the season, or at least I think I am.

  13. There was snow in Missouri, but it stayed west. Here just back in the 40's and rain and rain and rain. Everyone back home now has generators. We didn't growing up. Nice.

    Spring will come...

    or Summer.

    1. Having some back up power has been a true gift...which is what it was from my parents. I'm guessing that on average, we use it once every two or so years. Summer storms, winter storms, without we have no water, no heat and if the outage lasts too long, challenges with our septic system and no one wants that. Ours isn't big enough to run things status quo, but it does handle the essentials easily.

Yesterday's almost 18 hours of constant running set a record for us.

  14. Hi Coop, I had read your previous post and wanted to let you know how nice to see the weather easing enough to get a nice ride in. Nature plays a bit of a cruel joke on us in the spring and it can be hard to appreciate the beauty of a freezing rain / snow mix when the winter has already been too long. Hope the warm weather returns soon.

    1. B.R.,
We've had a lovely day, once the overnight rain stopped. The sun is out, the highest I saw the red pointer was 50 but we'll take it. The snow has gone down considerably and appears to be soaking in as much as running off. No riding today but I'll most likely be out tomorrow.

  16. Hey Deb,
The Polar Bear Alerts have ceased so we've got that going for us. Now if we can just avoid any further frostbite.....

Peg left for Cleveland early this morning to bring our daughter home...just spoke with her on the phone and she's in fact experiencing beautiful OH weather. By the time she(they) return tomorrow, conditions will be much fairer here.

I see good things ahead :)

Sorry, I thought you were teasing. We're in Minnesota, SE corner in Bluff Country, less than a mile from the Mississippi and about an hour SE of the Twin Cities.
