Instrumental - 2025/03/20

The timing wasn't planned, this is just working out this way.  Still sorting/cleaning, 4 more years of Harley Davidson Enthusiast magazines need disposing of.  Last Post, I announced my upcoming anniversary celebrating my obtaining the legal ability to operate motor vehicles, both those with 4 and with 2 wheels.  During that very same time frame and slightly before, this television program was making a huge, personal impact.  Nary an episode was missed.

Things (many) were never going to be the same....

An Anniversary Approaching - 2025/03/12

April 17, 1971....just a few days before dad's 45th birthday.  We put the '69 AT1 Yamaha on the rear bumper (cars had them) racks, those carriers clamped on the back of dad's 1965 Dodge Polara Station Wagon.  I drove us both out to Arden Hills to the Examining Station to warm up, I parked out in one of the 'neighborhood' streets on a block w/o NO PARKING signs.  We lifted the white bike off the racks, then laid the racks in the grass along the curb.

I drove the car to the staging area and waited to take my driving test.  A score of 98, parallel park was not perfect.  With temporary license in hand I went the Right Way around, back to the 'neighborhood' spot where dad was waiting with my Yamaha.  Car parked, I donned my Buco helmet, rode over and parked in the staging area for the motorcycle tests.  Dad walked over to spectate.

There were a dozen or so bikes ahead of me, a nice-weather Saturday I'm sure.  4 or 5 bikes ahead of me a guy started the test on his 650 Triumph.  Around the first part of the figure 8, the bike revved and launched, up and over the curb, coming to rest in a grass island.  Luckily, no one was physically hurt.

I'll never forget....the Examiner said likely more to all of us than to the testee...."lots of forms inside."

Here's the result and as you can see, an exceptional performance documented!

A year later I had my first car, as it turns out from the same guy that sold me the white Yamaha.

The same box containing this old Temporary License contained a couple more things....thank you Mr. Anderson.  So I'm a Tote'r.  My buddies that spend time with me around the campfires will attest to the fact that I'm still perfecting....putting the polish on my fire starting skills.  Much too late for Boy Scout acknowledgement but when I make the grade, I'll be just as proud!

I had to see this card to remember the test and the ceremony that celebrated my accomplishment.

Before and along with my legal ability to ride, an interest in all the regional Happenings.  This is how we did things way back before Socialing.....

That's it for now.  If you've been following along, you'd think that I'd be out of 'Old Stuff' by now.

I must be getting close.

One Of Those "That Was Then...This Is Now's" - 2025/03/10

Some of you remember our many driveway adventures.....

These pulled up from the archives in no particular order.  Our normally 'Dry' ditch, runoff from my calculated roughly 3000 acres of drainage area up the valley.

Of course there was a lot of snow on suddenly warm days.

Looking downstream....

A different winter, a different snow pack...

Tall boots often worn, cars left on both sides of the chasm

The low spot invited drifts....very HARD and DEEP drifts....

Back in the olden days we had real winters, winters with snow.

It's been 5 years since we raised the driveway over the top of the big 5' culvert.  In all that time, this is the most water that has run through it, summer or winter.

Looking upstream...

And downstream....

Hopefully we're ready for some real future water/snowmelt events.  Finally the low ditch and slab don't fill with winter drifts.  My snow removal chores are orders of magnitude easier.

Infinity's End, Lake City MN Robotics Team - 2025/03/02

The long weekend's competition took place in Duluth, MN and included 110 teams from various high schools in the upper Midwest.  Initially I'd have been the bus driver assisting with taking the team to Duluth on Wednesday afternoon as well as bringing them back home Sunday morning but those plans changed.

So instead, I left home before 5 Saturday morning planning to see what I could see during the final day of their competition.  I'll post images here on my blog for a better look and feel at the day's events, check out the video here.

From the Lake City Graphic (2/27/25)

I avoid the MN route whenever possible...

Introducing Lake City's Infinity's End 2861....

I decided that it was time to leave, do some shopping and more exploring....

I'd walked enough....

And was ready to do some driving....

Down to Park Point....

Coffee in the truck....my view of the Superior, WI shoreline.  Only 15 degrees or so but that sun...out of the wind....felt pretty nice.

My intention had been to spend the night at my favorite Rest Stop down on US 53 but I changed my mind, decided to drive home instead.  It had been a Very Fine Day.

Seemed to be not a bad weekend for the Infinity's End folks as well.
